An Anniversary of Hope
New York Social Diary

Last Saturday night in East Hampton at the estate of Courtney Sale Ross, friends and family gathered to celebrate the inaugural event of the 40th anniversary of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial, including his widow Ethel and some of his children. The Memorial was founded the year of Senator Kennedy's assassination. It is a nonprofit organization that works to realize Robert Kennedy's dream of a peaceful and just world. Its domestic and international programs work to empower the oppressed, build our next generation of leaders and tackle the toughest problems facing our civilization. The Robert F. Kennedy Memorial will hold events across the country to mark the anniversary, including a cocktail reception in Edwards, Colorado; a reception in Denver at the Democratic National Convention; an Annual Golf Tournament in Hyannis Port; an RFK Gala and Honoree dinner in New York; and a cocktail reception in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Sunshine’s the Best Medicine: Ross senior raises money for Camp Sunshine

It was Halloween and Harley Braun was at a dance. But at this dance, Braun, a petite 17-year-old with brown hair and a wide smile, wasn’t surrounded by peers at school. Instead, she was in Maine at Camp Sunshine, a not-for-profit retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The camp runs week-long programs throughout the year and is free of charge. Braun has had a hand in charity work for several years. She founded the “Cause for a Cure” club, which raises money for cancer organizations, at the Ross School, where she is a senior. While researching different programs to donate to last year, Braun stumbled upon the Camp Sunshine website and decided to volunteer.

An evening of comedy, dinner, and dancing at the Ross School
June 24, 2009The Martha Blog

I spent this past weekend at my home in East Hampton at the eastern end of Long Island. On Saturday evening, I had the great pleasure of attending the Ross School's Sixth Annual Live At Club Starlight Benefit for Ross Scholarships. I was actually this year's Honoree, recognized for my belief in the power of learning, for my achievements as a teacher, and for serving as an inspiration to children everywhere. The Ross School is an extraordinary learning establishment founded in 1991 by Courtney Sale Ross and her late husband Steven J. Ross. It is heralded for its unique and progressive curriculum, serving students from grades K-12. Ross provides an educational experience, which gives its students a global perspective making them familiar with all cultures. It was an evening of comedy, dinner, and dancing, featuring Seth Meyers of Saturday Night Live and a special performance by Alexa Ray Joel - Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley's daughter! I also presented the Martha Stewart scholarship to the amazing Greg Grossman, the accomplished 14-year-old chef. Watch this video clip about the Ross School from my television show and please, tell me what you think.
